- Barzillai Shuford Graves (1854-1942) was at least the fourth member of the family with his distinctive first name. Hailed as “Caswell County’s grand old man” at his death, Baz was elected sheriff at age 20. He served several terms and later served as clerk of court and a county commissioner. He was a delegate to the 1932 Democratic National Convention that nominated Franklin D. Roosevelt. His name “had been prominently connected with political, religious and civic activities in this section for almost 70 years,” the Greensboro Daily News said in his obituary.
