The expansion contained six units that were larger than the first phase. The entire complex is united beneath a variegated red and beige tile roof, and includes limestone entryways and trim, and a heavy modillion cornice. 642 Colonial Drive, High Point
The C. Myron Cecil House
Blog post — Extreme Makeover: Emerywood Edition — At 642 Colonial Drive, Only the Address Is the Same
listing withdrawn June 30, 2021; relisted July 15, 2021
listing expired September 16, 2021

  • $629,000 (originally $650,000)
  • 5 bedrooms, 6 bathrooms, 4,624 square feet, 0.4 acre
  • Price/square foot: $136
  • Built in 1910
  • Listed December 7, 2020
  • Last sale: $58,000, April 2013
  • Neighborhood: Emerywood, Uptown Suburbs Historic District (NRHP)
  • Note: Before 2013, the last previous sale was in October 1969 for $34,000.
    • The first clue that something is up is the description in the neighborhood’s National Register nomination:
    • “The house has a brick veneer, brick chimney on the facade [no chimney] with a blind, stuccoed arch [no], and eight-over-eight, wood-sash windows with blind arches over the windows and door on the first story [no blind arches here, either]. The three-light-over-four-panel door is recessed slightly on the left end of the facade [no] and flanked by four-light sidelights [not]. A one-story, hip-roofed porch extends from the right elevation [no porch], supported by full-height brick piers. A one-story wing on the left elevation has paired, eight-light, metal casement windows [no wing, no casement windows].”
    • They were referring to the house in its caterpillar stage:
  • That’s 642 Colonial Drive in 2010. It appears to have emerged from its chrysalis between 2013 and 2019. The house sold for $58,000 in 2013, and a Google Street View photo dated June 2019 shows the house as it looks today.
    • The interior is remarkable — glorious ceilings, floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, French doors. How much of it is original is an interesting question.
    • District NRHP nomination: “The house is listed as vacant in 1929; the earliest known occupant is C. Myron Cecil (Cecil Grocery) in 1930.”

  • $189,900
  • 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, 2,146 square feet (per county), 1.48 acres (per deed)

  • Built in 1908
  • Listed January 25, 2021
  • Last sale: $200,000, December 2020
  • Note: This is an odd one. The current owners bought the house December 22, 2020, for $200,000 and then put it up for sale again a month later at $189,900. That’s the same price the house was listed for when they bought it. The current owners apparently outbid other potential buyers. Then they accepted an offer the first day the house was for sale.
    • Aluminum siding
    • County records show 2,146 square feet; the listing says it’s 2,794. The deed shows 1.482 acres more or less; the listing says 1.42.

  • Price/square foot: $76
  • Built in 1919
  • Listed March 18, 2021
  • Last sale: $175,000, January 2021
  • Neighborhood: Gwyn Avenue — Bridge Street Historic District (NRHP)
  • NRHP district nomination: “The Bivins House has a broad, front-facing gable roof with shaped braces supporting the widely overhanging eaves. The main body of the house has weatherboard siding with beveled corners; the gabled eaves are wood-shingled. The house has both exterior and interior chimneys, and the windows are one-over-one sash. An offset front porch, with a gable roof — lower but otherwise matching the main roof gable — wraps around the southwest corner of the house. The porch, which is now screened, features brick posts with paneled caps and a paneled wood frieze. A matching porte-cochere extends from the south side of the house.”
    • “A particularly distinctive feature of the property is the use of river rock for a low retaining wall bordering the front yard, the risers of the front walk steps and step to the porch, and the planters located on either side of the front walk steps. The rocks in the step risers are all laid in a herring-bone pattern.”
    • “”This one-story frame bungalow was long the home of the Bivins family. Joe Bivins (1891-1961) married Ohna Poindexter in 1919. After living in Doughton, where they operated a general store at the end of the Elkin and Allegheny Railroad line with Foley Norman, and then moving to Gastonia, they returned to Elkin in 1925 to live and work. At that time, Joe Bivins and Foley Norman opened the Baseteria grocery store, which they continued to operate for thirty-two years. Beginning in 1930, Ohna Poindexter Bivins served as the first historian of the Jonathan Hunt Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was the granddaughter of Thomas Lenoir Gwyn and great-granddaughter of town patriarch Richard Gwyn.”

    • District NRHP nomination: “The Charles Store is a three-story yellow brick building that spans the block between Liberty and Main streets with primary facades at both ends. … The sheathing of large tiles added in the mid-twentieth century has been carefully removed, revealing the original brick shell with its simple, streamlined look achieved though subtle brickwork detailing and large open window areas nearly consuming the entire second the third floor levels. The first floor level retains its recessed entrance and large shop windows. The Fifth Street elevation continues the clean-cut look of the building with long rows of intact sash windows at second and third-story levels and a row of blind windows at first -story level. The Main Street facade was not remodeled in the mid-twentieth century and is remarkably intact. It continues, at third-floor height, the row of sash windows found on the Fifth Street elevation, but the second story is arranged with two rows of smaller sash windows. At the corner of the first-story level, shop windows and entrances with prism glass transoms and projecting cornices address both Main and Fifth streets. At the center of the Main Street elevation, a tall doorway with a fancy round-arched, ironwork fanlight provides entrance to the upper levels. North of the arched doorway is a loading door entrance, headed by the same cornice as found on the shop windows/entrances. The Main Street elevation is headed by a limestone cornice with a brick-paneled parapet.”
    • “From 1906 to the 1980s, the property was owned by H. G. Chatham, A. H. Eller, and their heirs. The Charles Store was built in 1925, replacing smaller commercial buildings. During the early years of the building, Hutchins Drug Store was located at the Main Street side of the building.”
