Wall home place.” Few clues about him exist online. The Reidsville Review reported on April 10, 1900, that “Mr. R.P. Wall, of Madison, is very ill. He is one of the town’s best citizens.” Sadly, they missed the opportunity 10 days later to write his obituary.

The address doesn’t appear in the city directory until 1942, suggesting a date of 1941 or 1942 for the house. The property was bought in 1940 by Roy Leonard Morgan (1908-1985) and Rosamund Woodruff Morgan (1901-1995); they owned it until 1965. Roy was a special agent with the FBI and a lawyer with Brooks, McLendon and Holderness. Those jobs were the start a remarkable career that included working as a war-crimes investigator, intelligence analyst and advisor to the prime minister of Japan. He also served on the Greensboro City Council.

The home’s original owners were John Jasper Phoenix (1867-1951) and Christina Forsyth Phoenix (1870-1940). J.J. had operated the company store for Cone Mills and was vice president of the Textile Bank, led by Julius W. Cone. He left around 1920 to become superintendent of the N.C. Children’s Home Society, a position he held for about 20 years. A longtime Mason, he was named grand master of the Grand Lodge of North Carolina in 1929. He played a significant role in the establishment of the Masonic and Eastern Star Home in Greensboro.
