    • The house, outbuildings and the 3.77-acre lot are subject to preservation covenants held by the Historic Preservation Foundation of North Carolina.

  • 5 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, 2,681 square feet
  • Price/square foot: $88

  • Last sale: $45,000, January 1994

  • Note: The house had been converted into three apartments “but has been used as a single residence for many years. The upstairs was once its own apartment and there is an apartment off of the back which can be accessed from the left bedroom on the second floor. Plumbing is still in place for the bathrooms and kitchens, but currently, only the main level bath and kitchen are operational.”
    • District NRHP nomination: “Side-gabled frame house with front cross gable and one-story hipped-roof porch supported by small columns with plain picket balustrade. Brick interior chimneys. Weatherboarded. Wooden steps leading to second floor have been added on east side. Joyce (wife Nell) was a Major in the Army.”
    • There are few clues on the internet regarding Joyce. He and Nell appeared in the city directory first in 1922, and by 1925 they were gone. The only person with that name in the Find A Grave listing lived from 1891-1976 and was married to Anita J. Joyce, 1893-1954 (Nell?). No hometowns are listed for either. They both died in Orlando and are buried there.
    • An intriguing item from The Danbury Reporter, November 3, 1910, under the heading, “Pinnacle High School”: “Mr. Mahlen Joyce has returned to Pinnacle from Portland, Maine, where he has been in the U.S. Army for two years. Everybody is glad to see him back again, especially the girls.”
    • In February 1913, The Western Sentinel in Winston-Salem reported that Mahlen had passed the second-lieutenant exam and would be posted to the Philippine Scouts. He had previously served in the Philippines and in the United States.

    • The owner also is selling 633 Lindsey Street and is willing to sell both properties as a package.
    • District NRHP nomination: “A construction date, builder and original owner of this two-story brick house have not been determined, but it appears that William Littleton Gardner (1848-1928), a Virginia native, acquired the tract of land occupied by the house in 1900 from J.W. and Sallie B. Jennings. Mrs. Gardner and Mrs. Jennings were both Blairs, and the property may have been involved in a Blair inheritance. It is also possible that Jennings, a brick manufacturer, built the house. The lot was a large one, extending some 800 feet to the south, all the way through to Piedmont St.
    • “Gardner had moved to Rockingham County in 1881, and at the turn of the century located in Reidsville where he first operated a butcher shop and later ran a small grocery store on nearby Snead St.

    • District NRHP nomination: “In 1886, James A. Ware (1853-1930), a young Reidsville merchant, acquired a 77 by 403 foot tract of land on the south side of Lindsey St. from Stephen H. Ware, probably a cousin, who was living across Lindsey St. a short distance east.
    • “Likely built a short time after Ware acquired the property, this house shares with fewer than ten others the distinction of being of brick residential construction dating from the 19th century. It is the sole one-story example. In form, it follows traditional patterns of frame houses of the period, with a single-pile front section topped by a side and facade gable roof of standing seam tin.
    • “Tall corbeled brick chimneys pierce the main roof ridge on either side of the facade gable, and a pair of one-story ells extends to the rear. Two over two windows and the front entrance are set in segemental arch openings.

Further embellishments include sawn eaves brackets, a wide frieze, round pierced attic vents in the gable ends, and cornice returns. • “FP mantels and newel posts from original Dunleath Mansion.”
    • The property was bought in 1905 by Leon M. Ham and his wife, Kate, who apparently built the house as a rental. They lived on East Lee Street. Leon was secretary-treasurer of the family business, the Ham Grocery Company at 215 S. Elm Street. The first known tenant was Dr. John R. Williams, a physician, in 1908. By 1909, the house was occupied by Jesse and Walter Waynick, both carpenters, and Miss Clara and Miss Molly Waynick.
    • A somewhat odd 1912 deed shows the house being sold to “D.A. McLarty and her heirs.” County property records identify her as Mrs. Eugene McLarty; he was listed in the city directory as living at the same address. He was a druggist. Also living there were Verne McLarty, a clerk at Sykes Drug Store, and William McLarty, a student. They owned the house for 54 years, selling it in 1966.
    • The house apparently has remained in one family since then. It is being sold by the estate of Norman P. Alley, who died in June at age 85. He was a World War II veteran and a retired employee of AMP Inc., now part of Tyco.
